How to See Moraine Lake at Sunrise in 2026

Last Updated on April 10, 2026

Moraine Lake at sunrise

Visiting Moraine Lake at sunrise tops the bucket list of many photographers and travelers. The intensely colored turquoise lake in the heart of the Canadian Rockies mirrors the surrounding snow-capped mountains in its still, sparkling waters, but it just became much harder to get there!

As of 2023, personal vehicles are not permitted on the road leading to Moraine Lake. That is, unless you’re staying at the pricey Moraine Lake Lodge or have disability tags on your vehicle. There are still ways to access Moraine Lake at sunrise, including private Moraine Lake shuttles. It’s just a bit more challenging and you need to plan ahead. This guide will help you figure out which option is best for you.

Understanding the Moraine Lake Road Closure

Parks Canada closed Moraine Lake Road to personal vehicles to address multiple issues and enhance the overall visitor experience.

Congestion was a major concern in recent years. Prior to the Moraine Lake road closure, 900 vehicles a day were able to park in the limited lots available at the lake. But 5,000 were turned away daily! This led to many frustrated visitors and even verbal and physical confrontations between guests and park staff, according to this article.

Protecting the environment was another concern. Studies found that vehicle emissions and noise significantly impacted Moraine Lake’s water quality and wildlife.

While these issues made it necessary to implement the road closure, this drastic change means it’s even more important that you understand the logistics involved with getting to Moraine Lake. You won’t want to leave the details to the last minute.

Getting to Moraine Lake at Sunrise

First, you should know that the road to Moraine Lake is only open to vehicles June through October. So plan to visit during those times.

(Wondering how to split your time between Banff and Jasper National Parks? Check out our 6-night 7-day itinerary, including a day trip to Yoho, here: Best Banff and Jasper Itinerary (plus Yoho!))

There are three main ways to access the lake: public transit, private Moraine Lake shuttles / tours, and staying overnight at Moraine Lake Lodge. But not all of these are ideal for seeing the spectacular sunrise. (Technically you could also bike to Moraine Lake. But that’s not a viable option for most, as the ride there is long and uphill.)

Public Transit to Moraine Lake

The Parks Canada shuttles run daily from June through mid-October, 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. from the Lake Louise Ski Resort. With the earliest shuttle not leaving until 6:30 a.m., this option will not get you to the lake in time for sunrise, except maybe in late September/October.

(Check out why September in Banff is the ideal time to visit.)

The drive time between Lake Louise and Moraine Lake is around 30 minutes. Once you arrive, you’ll have a short walk to the lake and a short, but steep hike up the Rockpile for the best views.

Also, keep in mind, in order to capture the beautiful sunrise colors, you’ll want to be there well in advance of the actual sunrise time. Click here for official Moraine Lake sunrise times. For more information about the Parks Canada shuttle or to reserve tickets, see the Parks Canada website.

Private Moraine Lake Shuttles

Private Moraine Lake shuttles offer earlier options including some with specific sunrise shuttles. Different companies offer different amenities and a variety of price points. You’ll want to research which Moraine Lake shuttle meets your needs. Some shuttles leave from the town of Banff and others from Lake Louise. Some offer an all-day excursion with stops at Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, while others just provide transportation to and from Moraine Lake. You can book a private Moraine Lake shuttle just for your group or reserve a ticket on a shuttle with other travelers. Here are some options.

From Lake Louise:

Moraine Lake Bus Company provides 2 sunrise shuttles from the Lake Louise area. One departs at 4 a.m. and one at 5 a.m. Pickup location is Samson Mall. This is not a guided tour, only transportation to and from the lake. You can view current prices and make reservations on their website.

Fairview Limousine is another option departing from the Lake Louise area. Pick up location is the Lake Louise Inn. Reserve this shuttle in advance on their website.

These Moraine Lake shuttles are convenient if you’re staying in Lake Louise. But if you’re staying in the town of Banff, you’ll need to find transportation to the Lake Louise pickup locations – about a 45-minute drive – or opt for a Banff-area shuttle tour like the one listed below.

From Banff:

Guided tours, like this one from Radventures, depart from Banff and can be good options for seeing both Moraine Lake and Lake Louise. This tour leaves from the Banff Train Station and includes transportation in an air-conditioned minibus to and from Moraine Lake and Lake Louise. You arrive at Moraine Lake in time for sunrise and spend 1.5-2 hours there. Then you travel to Lake Louise Village for breakfast before continuing to the shores of Lake Louise spending another 1.5 to 2 hours there.

Staying Overnight at Moraine Lake Lodge

sign outside Moraine Lake Lodge

Guests staying at Moraine Lake Lodge have access to the road and can park free at the hotel which is situated right on the shores of Moraine Lake. This is the ideal scenario, but at roughly $1100 USD per night, this option isn’t in everyone’s budget. If you are willing to splurge, however, guests of the lodge receive complimentary breakfast, light lunch, tea and coffee, guided hikes, and use of canoes. Plus, possibly the most important benefit is the chance for a more secluded lake experience when the day-trippers have left. We calculated the cost of a stay at Moraine Lake Lodge after factoring in the free perks to help people decide if it’s worth the splurge. Read it here: Is Moraine Lake Lodge Worth the Splurge in 2026?

Important Tip

The most important thing to remember is to plan ahead and reserve your transportation well in advance of your trip. A visit to the Canadian Rockies is a bucket list adventure. You don’t want to miss your chance of seeing the spectacularly turquoise Moraine Lake, especially at sunrise.
