Is Old Lahaina the Best Luau in Maui? Our Honest Review

Last Updated on January 4, 2026

Hula dancers at a Hawaiian luau

Heading to Maui and thinking about going to a luau? Hawaiian luaus are a fun and cultural event, but they also come with a hefty price tag. Before you splurge, you’ll want to make sure the experience is truly worth it. On our recent family vacation to Maui, we attended the Old Lahaina Luau – often considered the best luau in Maui. My husband and I, along with our three kids (ages 15, 18, and 20) enjoyed the experience, but is it worth the high cost?

Here’s what you can expect at the Old Lahaina Luau – the good and the bad.

Old Lahaina Luau Review

This was our first time visiting Hawaii and before our trip we decided we were going to splurge on a luau. After researching the best Hawaiian luaus in Maui, we chose Old Lahaina for a few reasons:

  • It consistently receives glowing reviews.
  • It’s known for offering an authentic cultural experience.
  • It’s named the “Reader’s Choice for Best Luau in Hawaii” by Hawaii Magazine many years in a row.

Old Lahaina Luau Prices

Let’s start with the cost of the luau – because if you’re planning to go, it’s probably one of your biggest questions.

Many people have sticker shock when they see the cost of a Hawaiian luau. I know I did! But when you break it down and see all that’s included – a 3-course traditional Hawaiian feast, unlimited cocktails and drinks, authentic Hawaiian entertainment, and an education in Hawaiian culture – it’s still expensive!

But many people consider it worth the investment.

At the time of this writing (keep in mind prices may change) Old Lahaina Luau prices including tax and service charge are:

  • $230 for ages 13 and up
  • $140 for ages 3-12

If you decide to go, know that luaus in Maui sell out fast, especially the popular ones. We booked about three months in advance, and I’d recommend doing the same if you want the best seating. The earlier you book, the closer you’ll be to the stage. Plus, if needed, you can cancel with at least 24 hours’ notice.

What to Wear to a Hawaiian Luau

Having only been to Hawaiian-themed parties thrown by friends, I wasn’t sure what to wear to an actual Hawaiian luau in Maui. Turns out, relaxed, tropical attire is the way to go – think floral dresses, Hawaiian shirts, and comfortable sandals. We felt perfectly dressed for the occasion.

Since you’ll likely be walking on grass, it’s best to skip the heels. And once the sun sets, you may appreciate a light sweater or wrap. Dressing up for the luau added to the fun – it felt festive and special without being too formal.

Everyone also receives a soft, real flower lei at arrival which was a special touch.

Arriving and Exploring

Parking at the luau is very easy – there’s free parking onsite, and overflow parking across the street in the mall parking lot.

You’ll want to get there right when check-in opens so you have plenty of time to grab a drink, explore the beautiful oceanside grounds, and take advantage of the golden-hour lighting for photos before the sun sets.

From the moment you first arrive, there’s a relaxed yet festive vibe, with tropical music, ocean breezes, and people mingling with Mai Tai’s in hand. This was one of my favorite parts of the entire night. The whole experience felt magical and memorable.

Seating Options at the Luau

There are two seating types at the Lahaina Luau: floor seating on cushions around low tables near the stage, and regular table-and-chair seating. While the floor seats are the closest to the performers, I was very glad we weren’t sitting on the ground – it didn’t seem to be the most comfortable for the full 3-hour evening.

If you or someone in your group is older, has mobility concerns, or simply prefers a chair, I’d recommend going with the table seating. The venue is wheelchair accessible, too – just let them know when you book. And just know there didn’t seem to be a bad seat in the entire place.

The Food: Old Lahaina Menu Highlights

The three-course Hawaiian feast consisted of shareable plates served right at your table. I’m not sure if the menu items rotate, but our meal included: chips with hummus dip, coconut jello, poi, salad, chicken, fish, steak, and pork from a tender roasted pig that’s cooked traditionally in an underground oven. (You even get to watch them unveil and shred the meat during a special ceremony.)

A pineapple sponge cake topped off our meal, while unlimited tropical cocktails, wine, beer, and soft drinks were included as well.

My husband and kids aren’t the most adventurous eaters, so I wasn’t sure what they’d think of the traditional Hawaiian cuisine. While the menu offered a wide variety of dishes and everyone found a few things they liked, I’m not sure we all had our fill. It wasn’t due to a lack of food – there was plenty – it’s just that there wasn’t quite enough of the few items my family was willing to eat.

A Journey Through Hawaiian History

Hawaiian performers at a luau

The entertainment featured hula dancing, music, and storytelling that took us on a journey through Hawaiian history. You could tell the performers were passionate about sharing their heritage with the audience.

The evening lasted about three hours, and by the end, we were all a bit tired – and dare I say it, even ready for it to wrap up.

Is the Old Lahaina Luau Worth It?

All in all, it was a memorable night filled with good food, stunning ocean views, live Hawaiian music, and rich cultural traditions. We had an enjoyable time – and the Old Lahaina Luau was the perfect choice for us – but is the ‘best luau in Maui’ worth the high price tag?

We think it was worth experiencing once. It’s one of those iconic experiences that feels like a “must” when visiting the Aloha State. While we’re glad we did it, we also agreed that we don’t need to do another luau in the future.

What do you think? Is a Hawaiian luau worth the money? Have you attended one before? Tell us in the comments. We’d love to hear from you.
