Hidden gems are becoming harder to find these days, especially in much-traveled destinations like Italy. But driving through Tuscany recently, we stumbled upon one that truly lived up to the phrase. Montefioralle, Italy is a quintessential medieval Tuscan village dating back to the 11th century – and a true hidden gem Italy travelers will fall in love with!

Perched on a hill overlooking Greve in Chianti, this small walled village – population 100! – felt like a step back in time: peaceful, beautifully preserved, and refreshingly free of cars and crowds. With its winding cobblestone lanes, stone houses adorned with flowers, and sweeping vineyard views, Montefioralle was everything we imagined a Tuscan hill town to be.

If you’re exploring the Chianti region, carve out a few hours for this quiet spot. It’s one of the best Tuscany hidden gems and a perfect place to wander, take photos, and soak in the timeless charm of rural Tuscany.
Where is Montefioralle?

If you draw a line between Florence and Siena, Montefioralle sits almost exactly in the middle. It’s just 45 minutes south of Florence or a little over an hour north of Siena. While it’s best reached by car, you can take a bus to nearby Greve in Chianti if you’re willing to tackle the steep 30-minute walk up to the village.
We stayed three nights at an agriturismo in Greve, which made visiting Montefioralle super easy – it was just a short five-minute drive away.
Strolling Around Town

Montefioralle is so small and inviting that it hardly requires a plan. Simply park at one of the two small parcheggios on either end of the village, grab your camera, and start wandering.
We arrived around 9 a.m. on a weekday and practically had the place to ourselves.

For an hour we wandered the cobblestone lanes, encountering only a handful of other visitors. Forget the map – you can’t possibly get lost here. There’s one main walkway that loops around the village. Just explore and admire the scenery around every corner.

We were struck by how picturesque everything was. In fact, we don’t think we’ve ever seen so many beautiful wooden doors in one place!

Keep an eye out for the historic home of the Vespucci family, where explorer Amerigo Vespucci once lived. It’s right on the main street and has the letter “V” and the family’s coat of arms above the doorway.

We didn’t eat in Montefioralle, but you’ll pass a few cozy restaurants along the way if you’re in the mood for coffee or a meal.

Be sure to duck down the narrow side alleys that branch off from the main loop. There you’ll see dramatic panoramic views of the surrounding Chianti vineyards.

Postcard Views of Montefioralle
For a picture-perfect view of this Tuscany hidden gem, drive half a mile beyond the village (away from Greve) to Via San Cresci. From here, you get an incredible view looking back at the town. It’s especially beautiful in the late afternoon when the sun is behind you.

Continue along Via San Cresci for a scenic 10-minute drive back to Greve in Chianti. You’ll pass the Pieve di San Cresci, a small catholic church from the 10th century. We stopped for about 5 minutes – which is all you really need since you’re only allowed to admire it from the outside.

If you’re exploring without a car, the 2.5-mile route from Montefioralle to Pieve di San Cresci and back down to Greve can be walked in under 90 minutes. It’s mostly downhill, peaceful, and filled with those classic Tuscan vineyard views.
Wine With a View at Montefioralle Winery
Just outside of town sits Montefioralle Winery, a small family-run estate with stunning views back toward the hilltop village.

We toured the winery later that afternoon, and while you can never go wrong with a Tuscany wine tasting, we’ll admit we weren’t quite as impressed as we were with some others we visited during our week in Tuscany.

Other wineries offered longer, more memorable and engaging tours. Montefioralle Winery was still pleasant and worth a stop if you have the time, but if your schedule is tight, focus on exploring the village itself – that’s the true highlight of this Italy hidden gem.
A Tiny Village, a Big Impression
If your travels take you through the Chianti region, Montefioralle is an easy and rewarding detour. It doesn’t take long to explore – just a couple of hours – yet it captures everything that makes Tuscany so special: cobblestone streets, vineyard views, and a peaceful atmosphere that’s increasingly hard to find in Italy. A visit to this Tuscany hidden gem will be a highlight of your trip!
