Two Harbors, Minnesota, located on the shores of Lake Superior, is often considered a gateway to the North Shore. And while people travel through on their way from Duluth to Grand Marais, the town is worth more than just a passing glance.

I recently spent a weekend exploring this small North Shore community. I knew it would be scenic (it’s right on Lake Superior after all), but I didn’t realize how many notable landmarks it has. In fact, for a town of fewer than 4,000 people, Two Harbors has accumulated an impressive list of claims to fame. It’s the birthplace of 3M, it’s home to Minnesota’s oldest operating lighthouse, and it’s located minutes from Gooseberry Falls State Park, recently voted best state park IN THE NATION!
Add in scenic waterfront views, historic ore docks, fun local restaurants, and a lighthouse bed and breakfast, and you’ll find plenty of reasons to linger here a little longer.
Here are 8 things to do in Two Harbors and why it’s worth a closer look.
-
Visit Gooseberry Falls State Park

If you’ve heard of Two Harbors, chances are you’ve also heard of Gooseberry Falls State Park.
Located just minutes northeast of Two Harbors, Gooseberry Falls is one of Minnesota’s most visited state parks and was recently voted the #1 state park in America in USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Awards.
After visiting for myself, I can see why.

The park features a series of waterfalls cascading over a rocky gorge, along with easy walking paths and scenic overlooks that make it accessible for visitors of all ages. Even if you’re not a serious hiker, it’s worth making the stop.
If you’re planning a North Shore trip, Gooseberry Falls alone is a reason to put Two Harbors on your itinerary.
-
See Minnesota’s Oldest Operating Lighthouse

One of the most recognizable landmarks in Two Harbors is the historic lighthouse overlooking Agate Bay.
Built in 1892, it holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in Minnesota.
But the best part about it is that you can actually stay there.
Today, the lighthouse operates as a bed and breakfast, allowing guests to spend the night overlooking Lake Superior. I can’t think of many places where you can sleep inside a historic lighthouse, which makes this one of the most unique lodging options on the entire North Shore.
Even if you’re not staying overnight, it’s worth walking out to see.
-
Discover the Birthplace of 3M

This was probably the biggest surprise of the entire trip. Like many people, I’ve used 3M products my whole life… Scotch tape, post-it notes, command strips, Scotch-Brite sponges, the list goes on. In fact, my mom worked for 3M in Minneapolis for many years.
I never realized that 3M actually began in the tiny town of Two Harbors.
The company started here in 1902 as the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. While the original mining venture wasn’t particularly successful, the company eventually evolved into the global corporation we know today.
There’s even a small museum in town dedicated to the company’s history. Unfortunately, it was closed during my visit, but it’s on my list for next time.
-
Watch Ore Boats at the Historic Ore Docks

The massive ore docks that extend into Lake Superior are impossible to miss.
For more than a century, these docks have played an important role in transporting iron ore from Minnesota’s Iron Range.
I was a little disappointed there weren’t any ships in port during my time there because watching one of the giant ore boats arrive would have been fascinating.
If you’re lucky enough to catch an ore boat coming into harbor, it sounds like one of the top experiences in Two Harbors.
-
Visit the Historic Edna G. Tugboat

I also stopped to see the Edna G., a historic tugboat that has become an iconic landmark in Two Harbors. For decades, the boat helped guide massive ships through Agate Bay before being retired and preserved as a museum.
I’m not usually one who seeks out maritime history, but it was cool to see the lighthouse, ore docks, harbor, and tugboat and just how important Lake Superior has been to this community. It’s a quick stop, but worth adding to your waterfront walk.
-
Walk the Agate Bay Breakwall

One of my favorite experiences in town was walking the Agate Bay Breakwall.
The long rock walkway stretches out into the lake and offers beautiful views of the harbor, lighthouse, and surrounding shoreline. There’s something peaceful about being surrounded by Lake Superior on both sides while watching the waves roll in.
-
Explore Two Harbors on the Sonju Trail

The Sonju Trail is an easy walk from Burlington Bay to Agate Bay along Lake Superior. This paved path winds through Two Harbors and connects several parks and waterfront areas. Unlike some of the North Shore’s more rugged hiking trails, the Sonju Trail is suitable for walkers, runners, and cyclists of all ages.
-
Eat, Drink, and Unwind at Local Favorites
One of the highlights of any trip is finding local favorites. During my visit, I stopped at the Tipsy Mosquito, a wine and spirit bar that has a cool, speakeasy vibe. I loved the vintage furniture and creative décor.

Another popular stop in the area is Castle Danger Brewery, one of the North Shore’s most popular gathering spots and best-known craft beer destinations. With a spacious taproom and outdoor seating, it’s a great place to unwind after hiking, sightseeing, or exploring the Lake Superior shoreline.

Locals also recommended several other spots worth checking out, including Larsmont Trading Post for breakfast, Louise’s for breakfast or lunch, and Black Woods Grill & Bar for lunch or dinner.
Two Harbors: A Small Town with a Big Story
While Two Harbors is a fairly quiet town, this small community packs more history and outdoor adventure than I realized. If you’re making the trek between Duluth and Grand Marais, Two Harbors is worth a stop. Any town that can claim Minnesota’s oldest operating lighthouse, the birthplace of 3M, and America’s top-rated state park has an interesting story to tell.
