American Players Theatre: One of the best hidden gems in Wisconsin

Last Updated on September 13, 2023 by Deanne

outdoor theater with packed audience

Sipping a Riesling under starry skies. Sitting among two beautiful backdrops – one of nature, the other skillfully handcrafted. Smiling. Laughing. Being totally entertained. This experience is one of my favorite traditions and why I consider American Players Theatre among the best hidden gems in Wisconsin.

Professional performances of Shakespeare and other masterful playwrights come to life in this outdoor amphitheater nestled on a hill in the woods. Located in Spring Green, American Players Theatre (APT) is situated among the rolling hills of southwest Wisconsin roughly an hour’s drive from Dubuque, Iowa, and Madison, Wisconsin, two hours from Milwaukee, and a 3.5-hour drive from Chicago.

If you’re scoping out hidden gems in Wisconsin, be sure to put APT on your travel itinerary. Here are 5 reasons why.

(Wondering what to wear to APT or where to park? See FAQ’s at the end of the article.)

  1. APT’s open-air amphitheater

The serene outdoor setting is APT’s biggest draw. Picture an outdoor performance as the sun begins to set. The sun casts a warm glow on the actors and beautifully crafted backdrops. A slight breeze rustles leaves in the distance while nature sings subtly in the background. Mingling natural beauty with entertaining performances creates an enchanting experience, enticing theater and nature lovers alike.

The 1,075-seat open-air amphitheater is newly renovated with great natural acoustics and no bad seat in the house – although sitting center stage a few rows back is always my ideal preference. Actors walk up and down the aisles and utilize all sides of the stage, immersing the audience into every show.

While the outdoor theater on the hill is the flagship of APT, a more intimate 200-seat indoor theater is also on the property allowing performances to run later in the year and serve a wider audience.

  1. World-class performances

Beginning each June, American Players Theatre schedules nine plays to run in rotation annually through November. Many are by Shakespeare, but other plays have included works by Thornton Wilder, George Bernard Shaw, and Anton Chekhov, among others.

Despite its small-town setting, APT draws professional and talented actors from all over the country employing a diverse cast. APT’s commitment to excellence is evident in all their plays, as seasoned veterans and rising stars alike perform in APT’s world-class productions. Shows run almost daily in the summer and fall, featuring evening performances and matinees.

  1. Picnic in the woods

Positioned on 110 acres of beautiful Wisconsin woods, APT provides picnic tables, grills, and covered shelters to sit and have a picnic before the show. They encourage people to bring their own food or order ahead from their selection of sandwiches, picnic baskets, and pies provided by Hubbard Avenue Diner. Arrive early and include a pre-show picnic to enhance the fun of your APT experience.

  1. Cultural enrichment

APT is not only a hidden gem in Wisconsin but an educational and cultural gem. The history and excellence of Shakespeare and other intelligent playwrights take center stage as APT’s diverse repertoire illuminates minds and broadens perspectives. More than merely entertainment, this unique venue is an enriching way to immerse yourself in culture and the arts.

  1. Spring Green’s nearby attractions

American Players Theatre may seem a bit remote but it’s surrounded by other cultural attractions, beautiful landscapes, and charming towns.

Spring Green is a quaint escape from the urban hustle, where you’ll find artisan shops and local eateries. Frank Lloyd Wright’s former home and studio, Taliesin, is nearby, as well as the famed House on the Rock – an architectural wonder full of unique collections and oddities. Read our article about all the Top Things to do in Spring Green.

A true hidden gem in Wisconsin

American Players Theatre is more than a destination, it’s an experience. The serene surroundings and immersion into artistic expression creates a unique atmosphere and camaraderie among patrons. This fusion of nature and culture makes it one of the best hidden gems in Wisconsin.

American Players Theatre FAQ’s and Important Info

What should I wear to American Players Theatre?

Most people dress casually to this outdoor theater. Always consider the weather for the day/night you’re there. Days can be quite hot, especially if you’re sitting in the direct sunlight. Evenings can be muggy or cool depending on the time of year. Wearing layers is always a good idea to account for the changing temperature during sunset of an evening performance. Wear comfortable shoes as there is a quarter-mile walk up to the hill theater. There is also a shuttle for people who aren’t able to walk up the hill. You may want to wear long sleeves due to the mosquitoes, although the theater does provide plenty of bug spray. Keep in mind they do not stop performances for light rain, so you may want to bring a poncho. Umbrellas are not permitted.

Is there free parking?

There is plenty of free parking in their large lot, with people directing cars where to go.

What about inclement weather?

rain hitting outdoor stage at American Players Theatre

According to their website, APT rarely cancels a performance in advance of bad weather, since weather changes so fast and predictions may not be accurate. They will stop a play for lightning and storms but will continue through light rain. If breaking for inclement weather, they will keep an eye on the radar and consult with their weather experts before deciding whether to cancel the show altogether. If a play is canceled and depending on how much of the play was shown, the audience may be offered a refund or rebooking.

What is this year’s APT schedule?

American Players Theatre performs nine plays each year on a rotating basis. To find out which plays are currently scheduled click here: APT schedule.

Where do I buy American Players Theatre Tickets?

You can purchase American Players Theatre tickets online. Tickets start at $61. Find out more here: APT tickets.

Chickens roam freely throughout the streets of Key West and have become an iconic part of the Key West experience. Some locals even believe the chickens bring good luck.✨ So go ahead and take that picture, but don’t feed them or bother them, as they’re protected by local law.
