Yosemite with Kids: 8 Tips From Our Family Trip

Last Updated on January 29, 2026

Yosemite National Park is one of our family’s favorite national parks – and that’s saying something since we’ve visited quite a few over the years! Exploring Yosemite when our kids were ages 6, 9, and 11 stands out as one of our top family vacations. We all had a blast, but it did take some planning to keep everyone engaged and happy. So what made it work? Here are our top tips for planning a memorable Yosemite vacation with kids that balances adventure, downtime, and fun.

Our Top Tips for Visiting Yosemite with Kids

1) Lodge Inside Yosemite National Park

If your budget allows, staying inside Yosemite National Park makes family travel significantly easier. Lodging within the park eliminates long entrance lines, reduces driving time, and allows for flexible schedules – especially helpful when visiting Yosemite with kids. Waking up and falling asleep in Yosemite Valley adds to the experience and is hard to replicate when staying outside the park.

2) Book a Tent Cabin at Curry Village

We loved these tent cabins!

Curry Village tent cabins are a fantastic family-friendly lodging option for a Yosemite vacation. They offer the fun, outdoorsy feel of camping with the comfort of real beds.

Our kids loved sleeping in a tent, while we appreciated the central location, nearby dining options, and easy access to shuttle stops. For us, Curry Village was the perfect balance between adventure and convenience.

Reservations for Curry Village (and all in-park lodging) open up 366 days in advance, and popular summer dates often sell out quickly. So mark your calendar and book as early as possible.

3) Easily View Yosemite’s Iconic Half Dome and El Capitan

Both of these iconic landmarks are easily viewed from multiple spots along the drive to Yosemite Village from the south entrance. The panoramas from Tunnel View are particularly impressive – it’s the type of “low-effort, high-reward” stop that’s perfect when exploring Yosemite with kids.

4) Rent Bikes in Yosemite Valley

Biking in Yosemite Valley is always fun!

Biking through Yosemite Valley is one of our favorite memories and a really enjoyable way to explore the park with kids. The valley is mostly flat, and the paved bike paths are safe and easy to navigate.

Bike rentals include options like tandem bikes, which allowed my 6-year-old and me to ride together. This is a low-stress way to see waterfalls, meadows, and landmarks without constantly getting in and out of the car.

Bike rentals in Yosemite Valley can be extremely popular in warmer months. Reservations aren’t always required but are highly recommended during peak season, especially if you want specialty bikes like tandems or kids’ bikes.

5) Choose Easy Hikes in Yosemite National Park

When hiking Yosemite with kids, shorter trails with big payoffs are the key to success. You don’t need long or strenuous hikes to experience the park’s beauty.

Some of our favorite easy hikes in Yosemite National Park include Lower Yosemite Fall, Bridalveil Fall, and the Mist Trail to Vernal Fall (as far as the footbridge). These trails offer waterfalls, views, and plenty of excitement without overwhelming young hikers. Keeping hikes manageable helps ensure everyone stays happy and engaged.

6) Enjoy the Starry Skies Over Yosemite Program

So many stars!

Yosemite is an incredible place for stargazing thanks to its dark skies and minimal light pollution. The ranger-led Starry Skies Over Yosemite program is a great family-friendly evening activity.

We were amazed by how clearly we could see the stars – and even spotted a shooting star. This program is seasonal, so be sure to check Yosemite’s Outdoor Adventures schedule during your Yosemite vacation.

(Another great California National Park for stargazing and hiking is Joshua Tree. Click here for our guide to Joshua Tree.)

7) Take a Cold (but Fun) Swim in Yosemite

A refreshing break

On warm days, swimming in Yosemite can be a refreshing and unforgettable experience. We biked to the small beach near Housekeeping Campground and jumped into the Merced River – even though the water was cold.

We didn’t stay in long, but our kids loved taking the plunge. Swimming in Yosemite’s rivers is allowed at your own risk, and the park encourages entering and exiting at sandy beaches. Always check water conditions and follow posted safety guidelines.

8) See the Towering Sequoias

The Sequoias are impressive

This is good advice for anyone visiting Yosemite – but especially if you’re visiting Yosemite with kids. The giant sequoia trees are a real “wow” factor due to their sheer size.

We explored Tuolumne Grove during our visit, but Mariposa Grove (the largest grove in the park) and Merced Grove are also great options. No need to see them all, but certainly make time for one.

Our Biggest Takeaways From Visiting Yosemite With Kids

Having a blast in Yosemite!

Yosemite with kids isn’t always easy – but a few simple choices made our trip more relaxed and more fun for everyone. Staying in the valley, choosing easy hikes, mixing adventure with downtime, and letting the kids take the lead sometimes all made a big difference.

If you plan ahead and stay flexible, Yosemite can be a place your whole family remembers for years to come.

If you’ve ever thought about taking a class in Italy, here are some tips:

✅ Be sure to choose a hands-on class over a demo style so you actually make the pasta yourself.
✅ No experience is needed - they show you how to do everything.
✅ Come hungry. Ours was five courses!
✅ Bring your camera. Many classes are set among the beautiful Tuscan countryside.

Our class at Podere Campriano was such a fun, relaxed way to connect with the culture - and we came home with new skills (and recipes!)
