How Much Time Do You Need In Sioux Falls, SD?

Are you thinking about adding Sioux Falls to your South Dakota itinerary but aren’t sure how much time to allow? I recently road-tripped to Sioux Falls with friends for a long weekend. We were visiting friends who live just outside the city, and they played tour guides for us as we explored the place they call home. (But not before we met their adorable farm animals and watched some of the most amazing sunsets!)

Many travelers make Sioux Falls a stopover on their way to other South Dakota attractions farther west, like Badlands National Park and Mount Rushmore. But whether you have a few hours, one full day, or an entire weekend, there are plenty of ways to fill your time with art, scenic beauty, good food, and good times.

How Much Time to Allow in Sioux Falls

On our trip, we spent a couple of days hanging out on our friends’ farm and one full day exploring Sioux Falls. That was perfect for us. While we didn’t experience everything there is to do in the city, our local friends made sure we saw the major sights and we even took in an outdoor concert downtown which was a fun way to finish our day.

If you have an entire weekend to explore Sioux Falls, you certainly won’t run out of things to see and do. On the other hand, if you’re just passing through, I’d still recommend stopping for a short but worthwhile visit.

Use our recommendations below to prioritize your list, decide how much time to allow, and map out your Sioux Falls sightseeing schedule.

If You Have a Few Hours:

If you only have a few hours in Sioux Falls, make Falls Park your first stop. Located along the Big Sioux River near downtown, this 123-acre park is home to the city’s waterfalls cascading over layers of pink rock formations. Walking paths and viewing areas let you see the falls from different angles, and there’s also an observation tower for a view from above.

The water level was low the day we visited, so the falls weren’t nearly as dramatic as they can be, but we still loved walking around the park, exploring the rock formations and taking in the scenery.

From Falls Park, head south along the recreation trail toward the Arc of Dreams. It’s about a 13-minute walk, making it easy to see both attractions even if you’re short on time.

This massive stainless-steel sculpture is quite a sight and was my favorite part of our sightseeing day. Spanning the Big Sioux River, the Arc of Dreams is nearly 300 feet long and 70 feet high. Its sides are a twisting helix shape meant to look like a blade of grass blowing in the wind.

But the most unique feature is the 15-foot gap at the very top. The gap represents the leap of faith dreamers must take to make their dreams come true. As a big dreamer myself, I loved this sculpture and all it represents.

If You Have One Full Day:

With a full day in Sioux Falls, you can see Falls Park and the Arc of Dreams at a more leisurely pace and spend time exploring downtown, including the city’s impressive SculptureWalk.

The SculptureWalk is one of the largest annual outdoor public art exhibits in the world. It’s free, self-guided, and open year-round. Plus the exhibits, which are displayed along the sidewalks of Phillips Avenue, change each year, so if you come back again, you can see something different.

You don’t have to be a serious art lover to enjoy this experience. We aren’t, but we had a lot of fun walking around downtown, spotting the different sculptures, and stopping for pictures along the way.

There are also a variety of restaurants located along the way where you can stop for lunch or dinner – many with outdoor seating – which is the way I love to dine on a nice summer day.

We ended our day of sightseeing with an outdoor concert at Levitt at the Falls, an amphitheater offering free concerts throughout the summer.

There was plenty of green space to set up a chair or throw down a blanket and food trucks offered a variety of options for dinner and drinks. Sitting under the setting sun with fun music, good food, and great company was the perfect way to cap off our Sioux Falls exploration.

If You Have an Entire Weekend:

If you have two or three days in Sioux Falls, you can slow down and add some activities beyond downtown.

One of the things my friends said they love about Sioux Falls is how many parks and outdoor recreation activities the city has. In fact, Sioux Falls has more than 80 parks and more than 45 miles of paved recreation trails. With more time, I’d rent bikes and pedal along the Big Sioux River and other scenic areas of the city.

One indoor destination to consider visiting (especially if it rains) is the Butterfly House and Aquarium.

In this family-friendly attraction, you can walk around with hundreds of free-flying butterflies in a tropical conservatory and get an up-close look at marine life in the aquarium.

Our friends also recommended a stop at Severance Brewing Co.

This family- and dog-friendly brewery is just steps from Falls Park and a great place to hang out, according to our friends. If we had more time, we definitely would have grabbed a pint here.

Visiting Sioux Falls in Winter?

Our friends also told us that Sioux Falls is worth experiencing in winter… Jacobson Plaza, next to Falls Park, has an outdoor refrigerated skating ribbon, and Falls Park transforms into a Winter Wonderland during the holiday season with over 350,000 lights, decorated trees, and colored spotlights illuminating the frozen waterfall.

A holiday visit also means you can catch a showing of “A Christmas Carol” at the historic Orpheum Theater, which our friends highly recommend.

So, How Long Should You Spend in Sioux Falls?

For us, one full day of sightseeing was just right. We were able to see the city’s major highlights without feeling rushed, and we had plenty of time to enjoy downtown and end our day at an outdoor concert.

If Sioux Falls is a stop on a longer South Dakota road trip and you want to fit in as much of the state as possible, you probably don’t need to devote a whole weekend to exploring this city. But if you’re looking for a slower-paced weekend with parks, biking, art, and good beer and dining, you could easily stay longer.

For us, the best part was catching up with good friends – both on their farm and exploring the city. Sioux Falls was a fun addition to our road trip and a place worth exploring if your travels take you through eastern South Dakota.
