Where to Stay Near Sleeping Bear Dunes
We stayed in a cabin at Betsie River Campsite, and it was a great fit for our family. We loved the relaxed, outdoorsy feel without needing to sleep in a tent. There was easy access to Sleeping Bear Dunes and nearby towns, plus there was even a small playground for kids.

If you want something simple and close to nature, these Sleeping Bear Dunes cabins fit the bill, but if not, you can also find campgrounds within the national lakeshore, and vacation rentals or hotels in nearby Empire and Frankfort.
Keep in mind you’ll want to book early if you’re visiting during the peak summer season.
Sleeping Bear Dunes Entrance Info:
Sleeping Bear Dunes charges a $25 entrance fee for vehicles.

Sleeping Bear Dunes Trails and Scenic Walks for Families

You don’t need to be a serious hiker to enjoy the Sleeping Bear Dunes trails. Many of the top spots are short hikes, scenic walks, or unique dune experiences that are perfect for families.
Here are a few favorites:
Empire Bluff Trail
The Empire Bluff Trail is about 1.5 miles round trip and relatively easy, making it ideal for families. The payoff at the end is one of the most stunning views in the park overlooking Lake Michigan and the dunes below. Just know that this trail is popular and can get very busy.
Pyramid Point Trail
Another great option is the Pyramid Point Trail, which also offers beautiful views but tends to feel a bit quieter.
This trail in total is over 2.5 miles, but you don’t have to hike all of it. Even just hiking to the dramatic overlook .6 miles in and then returning the way you came from makes for a fun and beautiful 1.2 mile hike.
The Dune Climb (A Must-Do Experience)

While not a traditional trail, the Dune Climb is one of the most iconic and fun experiences in Sleeping Bear Dunes. Located 5 miles north of Empire on M-109 on the west side of the road, this sand dune reveals gorgeous views of Glen Lake from the top. It can be a bit challenging to climb, but running down the dunes is exhilarating and a favorite for kids. Bring water, take your time, and enjoy the experience. It’s a memorable one!

There is also a picnic area, a bookstore, and restrooms at the bottom.
Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive (Panoramic Overlooks & Short Walks)
If you don’t feel like hiking the Sleeping Bear Dunes trails, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is a great way to experience the park. This 7.4-mile loop has 12 stops along the way, with scenic overlooks where you can get out, walk short paths, and take in incredible views of the dunes and Lake Michigan.

You don’t need to visit all the stops… especially if you’re traveling with kids or short on time, just pick and choose which ones you want to explore.
These are some of the popular stops:
- Glen Lake Overlook (Stop #2) for its bright blue water
- Dune Overlook (Stop #3) for your first big look at the dunes

- Lake Michigan Overlook (Stop #9) for one of the most breathtaking views in the park – Be careful of the dune climb at this stop… it looks enticing and while not illegal to climb down, it can be dangerous for the other climbers who are ascending the dune if you were to dislodge rocks that roll down. Also, the climb back up is much more strenuous than it looks. Many rescues must be made each year on this dune.
- North Bar Lake Overlook (Stop #11) for a unique view of two lakes separated by sand
