Planning a family road trip can be a challenge, but finding unique stops along the way makes the miles fly by. On our trek to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, our family of five decided to spend some time at the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum in Kentucky.
We had a great time exploring both sites, but overall our experience was a little mixed. Some exhibits we found fascinating, while others didn’t quite hit the mark for us. In this Ark Encounter and Creation Museum review, we give you the highlights and the “just okay” parts, along with some practical tips to help make your own family trip fun and memorable.

What Are the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum?

If you’ve ever been curious about the stories of the Bible or how they might look in the real world, the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum are worth a visit. Both attractions are operated by Answers in Genesis and are designed to bring a literal, Bible-based interpretation of the Book of Genesis to life.

The Creation Museum, located in Petersburg, Kentucky, just outside Cincinnati, takes you through an immersive look at the story of creation. The Ark Encounter – located about 45 miles south along I-75 – is home to a massive, full-scale replica of Noah’s Ark that will wow you regardless of your background. The drive between the two takes about 45–50 minutes, so it’s easy to see both in one trip.
Together, they welcome over a million people every year, and the Ark has quickly become one of Kentucky’s biggest tourism draws.
It’s important to know that both experiences are unapologetically Christian in their focus. While they are built to entertain and educate, their primary goal is to present the Bible as historical fact. Even if you don’t share those same beliefs, the sheer scale of the Ark and the detail of the exhibits make for an interesting addition to any Kentucky road trip.
Creation Museum Highlights
Since we were traveling from the north, we made the Creation Museum the first stop on our itinerary. Walking up to the museum, the first thing we noticed was the beautiful grounds – they were stunning!

Inside, the museum is structured as a chronological walk-through of the “7 C’s of History.”

We spent about two hours viewing the indoor exhibits, which included:
- A Journey Through Genesis: A walkthrough of the six days of creation
- A planetarium and a special effects theater: Great for a break from walking
- The Dinosaur Den: Animatronic displays that depict dinosaurs and humans together

While the exhibits are very well done, it requires quite a bit of reading, which can be a challenge for a family of five with varying attention spans. For us, the highlight was actually heading back outside to walk the garden trails and visit the petting zoo.

In total, we spent about three hours here, which felt like the perfect amount of time for us. It still was a good start to the trip, even if it didn’t quite capture our excitement as much as the Ark Encounter did later on.
Ark Encounter Highlights
The Ark Encounter centers around a massive, full-scale reconstruction of Noah’s Ark – over 500 feet long and built using impressive timber-frame construction. Seeing it tower over us for the first time was awe-inspiring. We were blown away by the sheer size of the wooden structure – it’s an experience we’ll never forget.

Once we got inside, the experience felt much more hands-on and immersive than the Creation Museum. We explored all three decks, which were filled with exhibits illustrating what life on the Ark may have been like.

It was really interesting to see the logistics of how Noah and his family might have pulled it off – like how he could fit all those different animals into the space, how they were able to store enough food for all the animals, and how they were able to get fresh water and airflow, etc.

These exhibits really made the Ark “come alive” for us in a way that’s hard to put into words. Then, we also enjoyed a short film about flood geology and how science can support the biblical account of a global flood.
When we finished touring the inside, we headed back out to the grounds. There are restaurants, outdoor eating areas, a playground, and a small zoo. Our daughter even rode a camel!

Overall, we spent about four hours at the Ark Encounter. It was definitely our favorite and a highlight of our trip.
How Much Time Do You Need?

How much time you’ll want at each attraction depends on your pace and how thoroughly you like to explore. During our visit, we spent about 3 hours at the Creation Museum one afternoon and roughly 4 hours at the Ark Encounter the next morning.
If you enjoy taking your time and reading every exhibit, you could easily spend longer at both.
While it’s possible to visit both in a single day, that would be too rushed for most people especially once you factor in driving time and meals. We’re glad we spread the experience over two days as it made our visit much more relaxed and enjoyable.

Ark Encounter and Creation Museum Tickets
You can purchase tickets separately for each attraction (currently $57 for an adult at the Creation Museum and $65 for an adult at the Ark Encounter). But if you plan to visit both, the Combo Ticket is the better value at $110 per adult, and it’s valid for one visit to each attraction within a 7-day period.
Discounted pricing is available for seniors and youth (ages 11–17), and children 10 and under are free. Parking is an additional fee (typically around $15 per vehicle).
Key Planning Tips
- Start Early. Arriving at opening helps you beat the crowds, especially at the Ark Encounter.
- Visit on a Weekday. These are popular attractions, and weekends (particularly in summer) can be busy.
- Wear Comfortable Shoes. You’ll be doing quite a bit of walking, both indoors and outdoors.
- Check the Schedule. Talks, films, and presentations run throughout the day and can add meaningful context to your visit. We actually saw Ken Ham during our visit to the Creation Museum as he was there for a book-signing.
- Purchase the Combo Ticket. If you plan to visit both, it offers solid value and flexibility within a 7-day window.
- Stay at a Hotel Nearby. There are several convenient towns with plenty of hotel options depending on your itinerary:
- Dry Ridge: Just 10–15 minutes from the Ark Encounter, this is one of the most convenient places to stay if you’re starting your visit there. We stayed overnight here which allowed us to get an early start at the Ark Encounter before the crowds arrived.
- Williamstown: The closest option to the Ark Encounter (essentially right next door), but it has limited lodging inventory.
- Florence: About 15 minutes from the Creation Museum and roughly 40–45 minutes from the Ark Encounter, with a wide range of hotels and restaurants.
- Cincinnati: Located right across the river from the Creation Museum (15–20 minutes away), offering even more lodging, dining, and entertainment options.
*If you’re visiting over two days, a smart strategy is to stay near whichever attraction you’ll be visiting on Day 2.
The Bottom Line: Is It Worth the Stop?
Ultimately, our family is glad we made the stop. As Christians, it was powerful to see these biblical accounts laid out in such a tangible way. It not only entertained us but really served to affirm and strengthen our faith. Whether you’re visiting for the faith-based message or just for the incredible craftsmanship, these two spots offer a very unique road trip experience.
